Probably because it’s the industry we’re in, but I am fascinated by statistics around marriage and divorce. Here in the UK, we have seen a slight decline in divorce rates over the past few years ( only marginal, but a decline nevertheless ), which on the face of it sounds good, but this needs to be coupled with the fact that the rate of marriage has declined at an even more rapid rate.
So as a ratio, the divorce to marriage ratio is actually at nearly an all time high. As ever, it seems that we could be just mimicking what the US has been seeing for a while.
Marriage rates in the United States have been declining for decades.
In 1920, the national rate was 12 marriages per 1,000 residents, and the figure peaked in 1940 at 12.1 percent. In Florida, the rate in 1940 was even higher, at 17.1 marriages per 1,000 residents.
The national marriage rate dropped to 6.8 per 1,000 residents in 2009, the most recent year for which statistics are available. In Florida, the marriage rate was 7.3, an all-time low, in 2010, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Divorce rates have increased over the same period. The national rate was 1.6 per 1,000 residents in 1930; in Florida, the divorce rate was 2.5.
The national divorce figure was 3.4 in 2009. It was even higher in Florida, at 4.2 per 1,000 residents.
Divorce rates peaked about 1980 both nationally and in Florida, and the rates have eased significantly since then.
Even that trend, though, is not enough to offset the decline in marriages.
In Polk County, the total number of marriages recorded remained fairly stable from 1998 through 2007, though steady population growth means the marriage rate dropped off.
But even the raw marriage numbers have plummeted in the past four years.
Polk County had 3,354 recorded marriages in 2011, compared with 4,029 in 2007, according to the Florida Department of Health.
The recent trend is even more striking when statistics for divorce and marriage are compared. In 2005, there were nearly twice as many marriages as divorces.
By 2011, divorces equated to 76.2 percent of marriages. Through June of this year, the correspondence is 77.5 percent.

In hindsight I guess it was inevitable – we were one of the 1st to start offering divorces online to the UK public, and it was generally seen as ground breaking that a traditional process was suddenly available online, cheap, and quick compared to going down the offline route.
Well, it now seems that the online World has caught up and is now contributing to the divorce rate – a shocking statistic has been released which indicates that in a study of behavioural petitions in 2011, 1 in 3 cited Facebook, and inappropriate behaviour to members of the opposite sex on the social networking platform, as a reason included in the divorce.
This is a marked increase to the last time the study was done, in 2009, when only 1 in 5 included Facebook as a reason behind a divorce filing online.
Of the 5000 petitions studied, only 20 included Twitter as part of the reason – the thinking behind it ( representing less than 1% of all cases ) is Twitter is wholly more public avenue of communication, so would be flirter tend to steer clear of it!
Whilst some are saying Facebook is fuelling the divorce rate, others are of the belief that people who are caught out using it as a means to contact and flirt behind their spouses back, would only have found another means anyway.
